Jesus Is Peace
John 14:27
By Jeff Olds
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
Jesus uttered these words to His disciples during the last meal they would share together before the crucifixion. He is assuring, no promising, those closest to Him that the Holy Spirit is coming to “teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you” (John 14: 26). This was a dark hour in the life of Jesus’ followers and Jesus promises peace and comfort.
There is a huge correlation between the darkness the disciples were feeling at that moment and the darkness the world was experiencing before the Advent of Christ. Isaiah 60:2 says “For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and His glory will be seen upon you.” Jesus exploded the darkness through His first coming. And Jesus promises the Holy Spirit to “break” the darkness of the disciples after his departure back to the Father. That same promise is available for us!
Christ’s first advent brought the Prince of Peace and our salvation. Christ’s return to the Father, after His death and resurrection, brought the promise of the peace of the presence of the Holy Spirit.
During this Advent season may the Peace of God rule in your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Father, please help me to surrender my heart, life, and will to the Prince of Peace.
